Absolut Vodka is a Swedish vodka produced in Åhus, in southern Sweden. The brand harks back to Absolut Rent Brännvin ("absolutely pure vodka"), launched in 1879 by Lars Olsson Smith; the current version reached the market in 1979, with a bottle inspired by old apothecary bottles. The brand belonged to Vin & Sprit until 2008, when the French group Pernod Ricard bought the company.
The raw material is winter wheat grown in the Skåne region. At the Nöbbelöv facility the grain is fermented and goes through continuous distillation until it becomes 96% grain spirit; in Åhus this spirit is rectified, diluted with water and bottled. According to Pernod Ricard, the original version contains only water and grain spirit.
