Amarula Cream
by Amarula · Liqueur · South Africa
Amarula Cream is a South African cream liqueur made with the fruit of the marula (Sclerocarya birrea), a wild tree of sub-Saharan Africa. It was launched as a liqueur in September 1989 by the Southern Liqueur Company, a subsidiary of Distell; the brand's marula spirit had existed since 1983. Since 2023 the brand has belonged to Heineken Beverages, which bought Distell.
The fruits are picked by hand between late January and March, mainly in the Phalaborwa region, in Limpopo province. The pulp, separated from the stone and skin, ferments like grape must in wine, is distilled twice and matures for two years in small oak barrels. Only then is the spirit blended with fresh dairy cream and sugar.
