Averna is the Sicilian amaro created by Salvatore Averna in Caltanissetta, Sicily, in 1868, from a recipe he received in 1859 from Fra Girolamo, prior of the town's Abbey of the Holy Spirit. The company stayed with the family until 2014, when it passed to the Campari Group; in 2026 the brand was sold to the Disaronno group.
It is made by infusion: selected herbs, roots and spices are infused with essential oils of bitter orange and lemon, and Wikipedia also mentions pomegranates among the ingredients; the blend is then reduced to drinking strength and bottled. It now has 29% alcohol (it once had 32%). The house suggests serving it with three ice cubes and an orange peel squeezed over the top.
