Buffalo Trace is the flagship bourbon of the distillery of the same name, in Frankfort, Kentucky, which has belonged to the Sazerac Company since 1992. The house traces its history back to 1775, when Leestown was founded on the banks of the Kentucky River; the current name and this label arrived in 1999, inspired by the old buffalo trails, one of which crosses the property. In 2013 the distillery became a US National Historic Landmark.
It is a Kentucky straight bourbon made with the grain recipe the house calls Mash Bill #1, with cereals from farms in Kentucky and Indiana and limestone water. It ages in charred white oak barrels in the distillery's historic warehouses and is bottled at 45% (90 proof).
