Casillero del Diablo Reserva Carmenere
by Concha y Toro · Wine · Central Valley, Chile
Casillero del Diablo Reserva Carmenere is the Carmenere red from the Casillero del Diablo line of Concha y Toro, a Chilean winery founded in 1883 by Don Melchor Concha y Toro. The line appeared in 1966, and the name comes from a story told on the label itself: to keep strangers away from the cellar where he kept his wines, Don Melchor spread the word that the devil lived there.
The grapes come from the Central Valley, from alluvial, stony and hillside soils with granitic subsoil, under a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Andes. According to the technical sheet for the 2020 vintage, the wine spends time in American oak barrels. The winery recommends serving it between 16 and 18 °C, with game meats, roasted or grilled vegetables and bean dishes.
