Catena Malbec
by Catena Zapata · Wine · Mendoza, Argentina
Catena Malbec is an Argentine red wine from Bodega Catena Zapata, in Mendoza. The Catena family has been linked to Malbec since 1902, when Nicola Catena planted his first vineyard of the grape in the province; his grandson, Nicolás Catena, took high-altitude Malbec to the world. The wine is made by Laura Catena, of the fourth generation, and by chief winemaker Alejandro Vigil.
It is a 100% Malbec from three estate high-altitude vineyards: Gualtallary (1,450 m), Lunlunta (920 m) and El Cepillo, in Eugenio Bustos (1,090 m). After a 5-day cold maceration at 10 °C, the must ferments with native yeasts for 10 to 16 days, with a total maceration of 19 to 22 days. The wine ages for 11 to 13 months in first- to third-use French oak barrels.
