Cointreau
by Cointreau · Liqueur · Angers, France
Cointreau is a triple sec orange liqueur made in Angers, France. The house was founded in 1849 by confectioner Adolphe Cointreau, who was joined by his brother Édouard-Jean in 1856; the latter's son, Édouard, joined the business in 1875 and created the liqueur's recipe, whose square bottle was registered in 1885. Since the merger with Rémy Martin in 1990, the brand has belonged to the Rémy Cointreau group.
The base is the peel of sweet and bitter oranges, sun-dried for three to five days, rehydrated and distilled in 19 copper stills at the Angers distillery, the brand's only one. Neutral alcohol and sugar, both from sugar beet from northern France, and water also go in. The producer suggests drinking it neat, on the rocks or in cocktails such as the Margarita and Cosmopolitan.
