Drambuie
by Drambuie · Liqueur · Scotland
Drambuie is a liqueur made with aged Scotch whisky, heather honey, herbs and spices. The brand ties the recipe to an elixir of Charles Edward Stuart, Bonnie Prince Charlie, who is said to have left it to the MacKinnon clan after the Battle of Culloden, in 1746. On the Isle of Skye, the Ross family of the Broadford Hotel refined the recipe on a whisky base, and James Ross registered the name in 1893; it comes from the Gaelic "An Dram Buidheach".
From 1909 the liqueur was made in Edinburgh by Malcolm MacKinnon, who in 1914 created the Drambuie Liquor Company with Georgina Davidson. Since 2014 the brand has belonged to William Grant & Sons, which keeps the recipe in a safe near Glasgow. It is 40% alcohol and is recommended over ice, in a Rusty Nail and with coffee.
