Erdinger Dunkel
by Erdinger · Beer · Erding, Bavaria, Germany
Erdinger Dunkel is the dark weissbier from Erdinger Weißbräu, a private brewery in Erding, Bavaria, which the label dates to 1886. It was born as a gift from the brewmasters to the owner, Werner Brombach, for his 50th birthday in 1989; he liked the recipe so much that he put it on the market in 1990.
It is made with dark wheat and barley malts, including roasted barley malt, hops and the top-fermenting yeast the brewery cultivates itself, following the Bavarian Purity Law. It undergoes 'Bayerische Edelreifung', a second maturation in the bottle, and comes in at 5.3% alcohol and 12.8 °P original gravity. Erdinger designed its own glass for it, with a bulbous top.
