Fernet-Branca is the amaro created in 1845 in Milan by Bernardino Branca, a self-taught herbalist, and produced ever since by Fratelli Branca Distillerie, which keeps the recipe secret. The house has exported to Argentina since 1907 and has run a distillery in Buenos Aires since 1925; bottles made there are also sold in Brazil.

The recipe brings together 27 herbs, roots and spices. Among those declared by the house are Chinese rhubarb, French gentian, galangal from India or Sri Lanka, chamomile, linden, iris, saffron, zedoary, myrrh and cinchona.

The plants become alcoholic infusions, extracts or decoctions, and the blend rests for a year in oak vats. Branca suggests drinking it neat, chilled, with cola or ginger ale, or in the Hanky-Panky cocktail.
