Frangelico
by Frangelico · Liqueur · Piedmont, Italy
Frangelico is an Italian hazelnut liqueur produced in Canale, Piedmont. Launched in 1978, it has belonged to the Campari group since 2010. The name comes from a local legend about Fra' Angelico, a hermit monk said to have lived in the hills of Piedmont in the 18th century, and the bottle imitates a friar's habit, with a cord tied around the waist.
The Italian hazelnuts are harvested, shelled, toasted and ground, and then macerated in water and alcohol; this infusion is distilled. The hazelnut distillate receives extracts and distillates of cocoa, vanilla and roasted coffee, and the concentrate is blended with alcohol, sugar and water, resting for six to eight weeks in tanks before bottling. The brand suggests serving it over ice, with a squeeze of lime or with sparkling water.
