Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut
by Freixenet · Sparkling wine · Penedès, Spain
Freixenet Cordon Negro Brut is a cava, a Spanish sparkling wine from the Cava Denomination of Origin, made by Freixenet in Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, in the province of Barcelona. The company was born from the union of the Ferrer and Sala families, and the brand comes from the nickname "El Freixenet", adopted by Pedro Ferrer Bosch in 1914. Cordon Negro was launched in 1974; since 2018 the German group Henkell has controlled the company.
It uses the three traditional Penedès grapes: Parellada, Macabeo and Xarel·lo. Like all cava, it undergoes its second fermentation in the bottle itself, by the traditional method, and ages for at least 12 months; in the Brut version, the dosage is 9 g/l of sugar. Freixenet recommends serving it between 6 °C and 8 °C.
