Jägermeister
by Jägermeister · Liqueur · Germany
Jägermeister is a German herbal liqueur (Kräuterlikör) from Mast-Jägermeister, of Wolfenbüttel. The company was born in 1878, when Wilhelm Mast opened a vinegar factory and wine business there; in 1934 his son Curt Mast created the recipe. The name means "master hunter" in German, and the label shows a stag with a cross between its antlers.
The secret recipe brings together 56 herbs, flowers, roots and fruits, among them citrus peel, liquorice, anise, saffron and ginger. The botanicals macerate for weeks in alcohol and water; the macerates form the base, which matures for months in about 400 oak casks.
Before bottling, water, alcohol, caramel and liquid sugar are added. The brand recommends serving it ice-cold, as a shot.
