Maker's Mark
by Maker's Mark · Whisky · Kentucky, USA
Maker's Mark is a Kentucky bourbon whisky, made at the Loretto distillery, now owned by Suntory Global Spirits. Bill Samuels Sr. bought the old Burks' Distillery in 1953 and bottled the first batch in 1958.
His wife, Margie Samuels, created the name, the label and the hand-applied red wax seal. The distillery building has been a US National Historic Landmark since 1980.
The recipe swaps rye for red winter wheat: 70% corn, 16% wheat and 14% malted barley. The spirit goes through a copper column and a second still (doubler) and matures in new white oak barrels charred on the inside, which are rotated by hand to different heights in the warehouses. There is no fixed age: the distillery bottles when its tasters approve the batch.
