Martini Rosso
by Martini · Liqueur · Piedmont, Italy
Martini Rosso is the red vermouth from Martini & Rossi, a house founded in 1863 in Pessione, near Turin, by Alessandro Martini, Luigi Rossi and Teofilo Sola, and owned since 1993 by the Bacardi group. The recipe is attributed to Luigi Rossi, a herbalist and liqueur maker, who created Rosso in the same year the company was founded.
The version sold in Brazil is made in the country from red table wine, natural plant extract, sugar and alcohol; the Brazilian label mentions more than 40 botanical species. The Italian recipe includes wormwood, quassia, savory and dittany, and caramel gives the dark red color. The house suggests serving it over ice or in an Americano, with bitter and soda.
