Monte Velho Tinto
by Esporão · Wine · Alentejo, Portugal
Monte Velho is the everyday red from Esporão, a family producer in the Alentejo based at Herdade do Esporão, in Reguengos de Monsaraz, an estate whose boundaries have not changed since 1267. The line was born in the early 1990s with the aim of following the profile of Esporão Reserva, the house's first bottled wine, in 1985, but without barrel or bottle aging and at an affordable price.
The blend brings together Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez, Trincadeira and Touriga Nacional, machine-harvested. The grapes are destemmed and crushed, ferment for five to six days in temperature-controlled stainless steel and go through malolactic fermentation.
Since 2018 the Monte Velho wines have been made in a winery built for the brand. It has 13.5% alcohol and vegan certification.
