Montes Alpha Carmenère
by Montes · Wine · Colchagua Valley, Chile
Montes Alpha Carmenère is the Carmenère in the Montes Alpha range from Viña Montes, whose winery is in Apalta, in the Colchagua Valley, Chile. The range began with the 1987 vintage Cabernet Sauvignon, made by Aurelio Montes and Douglas Murray a year before the winery was founded; in 2003 the house launched Purple Angel, which it presents as Chile's first icon Carmenère.
The 2022 blend is 90% Carmenère and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, from vineyards in Apalta and Marchigüe, hand-harvested. The grapes cold-soak for five days before fermentation, and the wine matures for 12 months in French oak barrels, half of them new. The winery recommends decanting for 30 minutes and serving at 17 to 19 °C.
