Mouton Cadet Rouge
by Mouton Cadet · Wine · Bordeaux, France
Mouton Cadet Rouge is the Bordeaux red created in 1930 by Baron Philippe de Rothschild, then 28 and owner of Château Mouton Rothschild, who began selling a wine under his own brand. The name combines the château's Mouton with the baron's status as the youngest (cadet) in the family; today the brand reaches about 100 countries.
It is a blend of Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc with the Bordeaux appellation, made with grapes from partner growers such as Jean-Pierre Charrut, of Saint-Quentin-de-Caplong. It ages for 10 months in tanks, on the lees, without wood and with minimal sulphites. It carries the Haute Valeur Environnementale and Fair for Life labels, and the house recommends serving it between 15 and 17 °C.
