Periquita is the best-known red from José Maria da Fonseca, a house in Azeitão, on the Setúbal Peninsula, founded in 1834 and still in the family's hands. The name comes from Cova da Periquita, the estate where the Castelão grape was planted; the wine from there became known in the village as the wine of Periquita. The brand appeared in 1850 and the producer presents it as the first red wine bottled in Portugal.

The current blend is Castelão, Trincadeira and Alicante Bouschet, from sandy soils. Fermentation on the skins takes place at 28 °C and the wine spends six months in new French and American oak barrels before going into bottle. José Maria da Fonseca recommends serving it at 16 °C, with meats, game and cheeses.
