Pitú
by Pitú · Cachaça · Brazil
Pitú is a sugarcane spirit (aguardente de cana) from Vitória de Santo Antão (PE), founded in 1938 by Joel Cândido Carneiro, Severino Ferrer de Moraes and José Ferrer de Moraes, who started out making vinegar and bottling aguardente from local mills. The name comes from the mill bought by the group and from the freshwater prawn common in the region. The brand was the first to sell sugarcane spirit in a can.
The traditional Pitú, called Branquinha, is sold as sweetened aguardente de cana, made with a spirit distilled from fermented sugarcane must and sugar, at 40% vol. It is bottled at the company's industrial park on the BR-232, in 600 and 965 ml bottles and 350, 473 and 710 ml cans. Exports began with Germany.
