Ruffino Chianti
by Ruffino · Wine · Tuscany, Italy
Ruffino Chianti is the Chianti DOCG from Ruffino, a Tuscan house created in 1877 by cousins of the Ruffino family, and is now released under the label 1877 Chianti, in reference to the first vintage. When Chianti became a DOCG, in 1984, it was a bottle of Chianti Ruffino that received the appellation's first seal, number AAA00000001. The house belongs to Constellation Brands.
The blend is 85% Sangiovese and 15% Merlot and white grapes, from vineyards in the Chianti zone between 200 and 350 meters, on galestro soil. It ferments for about 10 days in temperature-controlled stainless steel; after malolactic, it rests for a few months in stainless steel and concrete, without wood. The house suggests serving it slightly chilled as an aperitif.
