Sazerac Rye
by Sazerac · Whisky · Kentucky, USA
Sazerac Rye takes its name from the Sazerac, a cocktail of rye, absinthe and Peychaud's bitters served at the Sazerac Coffee House, on Royal Street in New Orleans, and regarded by the house as America's first branded cocktail. The owner is the Sazerac Company, born in 1869, when Thomas H. Handy bought the coffee house, and which produces the whiskey at the Buffalo Trace distillery, in Frankfort, Kentucky.
It is a straight rye with at least 51% rye, plus non-GMO corn and barley, aged an average of six years in new American oak barrels. It comes in at 45% (90 proof). The bottle, with its long neck and faceted base, recalls the decanters of saloons from before the American Civil War.
