Tonic water from Schweppes, a brand born in 1783, when the German Johann Jacob Schweppe developed in Geneva a method for producing carbonated water on a commercial scale; in 1792 the company opened a factory in London. Tonic with quinine entered the catalog in 1870. In Brazil, the brand belongs to The Coca-Cola Company and debuted in 1991, precisely with the launch of Schweppes Tônica.

The Brazilian version, sold as Água Tônica Schweppes, contains carbonated water, sugar, quinine, citric acid as acidulant, natural flavoring and sodium benzoate as preservative. The brand also sells in the country a sugar-free tonic, sweetened with aspartame and acesulfame potassium, and flavored versions such as the red fruit Rosé.
