Velho Barreiro is a cachaça launched in the 1960s by the Höffer family in Itapetininga (SP); the name is said to come from the nickname an ancestor of the family gave to his rufous hornero (joão-de-barro). In 1973 the brand passed to Indústrias Reunidas de Bebidas Tatuzinho 3 Fazendas (IRB), a company founded in 1950 in Piracicaba (SP) and now headquartered in Rio Claro (SP).

The Tradicional version contains sugar — the label classifies it as a sweetened cachaça — and is sold in a 910 ml bottle at 39% vol, and IRB recommends it neat, in fruit cocktails or in a lime caipirinha. The company exports to more than 40 countries and, in 2011, launched the Diamond line, which blends copper pot still cachaça with Velho Barreiro stored in jequitibá-rosa casks.
