History
Corona was born with Cervecería Modelo, founded in Mexico City on October 25, 1925, by a group of Spanish immigrants that included Braulio Iriarte, the owner of bakeries and a flour mill — AB InBev tells the story as that of bakers who swapped bread for beer. By 1928 the brewery was already putting 8 million bottles of its Modelo, Negra Modelo and Corona brands on the market.
In 1940 Corona began to be sold in a clear bottle, which the group says was the first clear beer bottle. The beer reached the United States in 1979, where it is now sold by Constellation Brands, and the brand's signature is the ritual of the lime wedge in the neck of the bottle. Since 2013 Grupo Modelo has been part of AB InBev. In Brazil, Ambev launched Corona in September 2014, at first imported from Mexico; in 2024 it opened a Corona line at its Nova Rio brewery in Rio de Janeiro, which went on to make 80% of the Corona long necks drunk in the country. In 2025, for the third year in a row, the Kantar BrandZ ranking named Corona the most valuable beer brand in the world.
